And so it begins.
Hey everyone.
I’m not gonna beat around the bush with this: I’ve hit a little bump in the road as of late. Graduation is right around the corner, and between finishing up the last of my college courses and trying to figure out what I’m even going to be doing after May, Dream State has been shifted to the back burner. It’s not the ideal situation for me, but I think it’s what I have to do.
I’ve been feeling a little jumbled about the comic as of late. Paper Cranes dealt with a lot of the themes that Dream State was going to cover, and while that doesn’t mean I want to abandon this comic, it just means it functions differently in my own mythos, and so I’ve been needing to take more time re-situating it, figuring out how it works again.
It’s been hard to write Dream State as of late, mostly because I’m not in the best of headspaces at the moment. Job hunting is one of the most exhausting and emotionally tumultuous things I’ve ever had to go through, and it’s been difficult trying to figure out how to climb that hill.
Act 0, by the end of it all, felt rushed and haphazard, and I don’t want that to happen to the rest of the comic (there are about 4 acts in all, as an fyi). So, I think the best decision I can make is to take some time to really focus on writing and production, build myself up a buffer, feel like I’m in a good spot, and the start updating regularly again.
That, and I kind of want to start working on something different too. I’ve got all these ideas at the ready, and once school’s out, I’m definitely gonna buckle down on getting both Dream State and maaaaybe a new comic running about some demons and hijinks I’ve been batting around for…geez, about five years now?
It’s not a decision I feel happy about, but Star and the Player and their journey is something I don’t want to rush or treat poorly, because as self-indulgent as it is, it’s important to me, and to my own growth.
Thank you all for your support, and for baring with me through this time. The fact that you choose to spend even just a little bit of your time reading this comic and supporting my work means the world to me.
As always, you can catch me on my art tumblr or on Twitter in the meantime.
Catch you on the flipside.
Bit of a schedule slip again! Sorry guys, but it’s for good reason:
oh dannnnng look at how nice this is turning out!
I want to make Act 1 really polished, so I’m gonna take a lot of time with everything; this comic is a good platform for me to try new things and really find my groove, and I’m really starting to feel it again after Paper Cranes burnt me out. Of course, since I’m still juggling school stuff, this means updates might get a little more sporadic, but I’ll try to let you guys know what’s going on in those events. Thanks for stickin’ around everyone!
OH DANG, DREAM STATE IS BACK
Been a long time coming, right? Where have I been these past few months, you may ask? Mostly recovering from finish my thesis project, a narrative-based game called Paper Cranes that you can check out here! You can download it from Gumroad for free, and if you’re feeling particularly generous, you can throw a couple bucks my way too! If you do play it, lemme know; I absolutely love hearing feedback from people, especially with a project like this that I’ve poured my entire heart into.
So, what’s going on with the comic? Weekly Friday updates again, per before! I’m really pumped to get back into the comic and into the story proper: this intro section is a lot of talking and exposition, but believe me, things are gonna get exciting!
I’m going to try to update the blog section of the site more frequently too, but if you wanna see me ramble about other stuff, you can find me on Twitter and you can check out more of my work at my art blog! See you all next Friday!
Hey guys.
So, you may have noticed that I missed an update on Friday. But instead of this being a make-up post or a double update post, this is actually kind of a bummer post: Dream State will be on hiatus during the month of November (and maybe December, we’ll see). I’m in the middle of working on my senior thesis, and I’m just really overwhelmed with the work and research that I need to do, so there’s no way I can balance a comic update with all of that.
I hope to prepare a nice big “mega update” once I’m able to sit down and work on the comic again without the pressure of my thesis, so no worries: Dream State will continue on at some point, I just need a break from it right now, with everything else going on.
As per tradition it is with these posts, I’m not gonna leave you guys empty-handed: it’s music recommendation time! If you’re anywhere on Tumblr, you’ve probably heard of Ghost by Mystery Skulls and seen the awesome animated video that goes with it, but I cannot get that song out of my head: it’s just too good!
Anybutt, sorry again about this hiccup. Hope to see you all soon.
So, good news: I have script written! [confetti shoots from various cannons, it is all very exciting and colorful]
Bad news: Still no new page today. Sorry guys! As I mentioned on Friday, today was my midterm review for my BFA Thesis, and it was…well, it went, let’s just leave it at that. It probably wasn’t that bad, but I’m prone to taking things on the worse side of the coin, and I needed a mental health night (which I spent listening to Thrilling Adventure Hour and drawing some gam gramps and the like).
On that note, I think I’m going to have to call the missed update a wash and just update as normal this Friday. It’s a bummer, but sometimes it just happens. We’re starting to get to some exciting things though (and a scene change!), so I’m pumped to get back on track with the comic.
See you all Friday!
